Head of Latvia proclaims changes to basic law on local elections

Latvian President Egil Levits proclaimed changes to the basic law on municipal elections, which will enter into force on 22 February 2020. This is written by the Diena.lv portal. According to journalists, the meaning of the amendments is that in case of early dissolution of the local Duma (if it takes place more than 9 or 24 months before the end of the term of office) the new one will be elected for four years plus the remaining term of the old Duma. The new changes also limit the term of office of the appointed interim government when the Municipal Council of Deputies is dissolved from 15 months to nine months. It is noted that 41 members of the Seimas (Parliament) of Latvia, having taken the initiative to submit amendments to the referendum, tried to delay the proclamation of this law. The initiative collected about 6,000 signatures with the required 154,868.
