Iran's Permanent Representative to the UN called for the lifting of sanctions amid the pandemic COVID-19
On July 2, Iranian Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN Majid Takht Ravanchi emphasized the need to lift unilateral sanctions that weaken the ability of target countries to effectively respond to the spread of coronavirus infection (COVID-19). This was reported by the Iranian agency IRNA on July 3. Takht Ravanchi made these remarks, speaking at a meeting of the UN Security Council at UN headquarters to discuss the negative consequences of the pandemic outbreak on the maintenance of international peace and security. He noted: Serious outbreaks of some viruses with a high mortality rate have consequences for security in conflict situations. One example is the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on conflicts in our region from Yemen to Palestine and Syria. In these countries, the pandemic worsened the socio-economic situation, negatively affected de-escalation efforts and peace negotiations, and, adding new problems to existing ones, further complicated the general situation, Ravanchi emphasized.
