Monument to Josephine Bogarna destroyed in Martinique

The monument to the first wife of Napoleon Bonaparte, Josephine Bogarne, was destroyed on the island of Martinique. This was reported on July 27 by the France-Antilles portal. The sculpture was dragged off the pedestal and defeated by supporters of the independence of Martinique, which is the overseas territory of France. These are activists of the RVN collective, which is named after the first letters of the three colors of the unofficial flag of Martinique red, green and black. Earlier, the RVN group demanded that the mayor of Fort de France dismantle the statue before July 26. The demand was not fulfilled, then the activists tore off the monument with cables and smashed with hammers. The monument to Pierre Belain d Eshambuck, the founder of the first settlement in Martinique in 1635, was also destroyed. The mayor of Fort de France and the prefect of the department condemned the demolition of the monuments. Note that the monument to Josephine Bogarna, erected in 1859, was beheaded in the early 1990s. The head of the statue was never restored in condemnation of Beauharnais for Napoleon's restoration of slavery in the French West Indies. Josephine was born in Martinique in 1763 in the family of a planter.
